Phase 3 - Expansion
In 2015, West Kelowna invested $805,000 in design and construction of Phase 3 improvements, which expanded the facility to the eastern downward slope to make full use of the entire Westbank Cemetery property. The project included: significant excavation and regrading; the planting of thousands of trees, plants, shrubs and grasses; construction of retaining walls, staircases, pathways and a perimeter driveway; fencing and irrigation. The expansion doubled the size of the Westbank Cemetery and was designed to meet the community's needs for the next 25 years.
Phase 2 - Beautification
In 2014, West Kelowna invested $300,000 to transform the Westbank Cemetery from a sand and gravel facility to a green, park-like memorial garden in keeping with the standards of many modern cemeteries. More than 3,500 shrubs and trees were planted as part of the project. A new information kiosk and parking lot fencing were also installed.
Phase 1 - New Amenities
Phase 1 Improvements centred around the installations of mausoleums and columbaria at the southeast corner of the cemetery. These stone and marble structures were situated to capture the beautiful views of Okanagan Lake and the Monashee Mountains beyond. Benches and landscaping were added to create a place of remembrance, peace, reflection and solitude for cemetery goers.
Phased upgrades were outlined in an October 23, 2012 report to Mayor and Council:
