For Immediate Release: from the Regional Waste Reduction Office
December 13, 2012
Garbage Disposal Will Rise Up in New Year
Starting January 1, 2013 it will cost more to dispose of garbage at two Central Okanagan facilities.
The Regional District of Central Okanagan Board of Directors approved the new tipping fees for garbage and other solid waste materials going to the Westside Residential Waste Disposal and Recycling Centre on Asquith Road in West Kelowna. City of Kelowna Council approved the new rates for the Glenmore Landfill on North Glenmore Road in Kelowna. Fee increases will apply to both residential and commercial customers.
The flat fee for up to 250 kg of garbage will rise to $10.00, starting in 2013, from $8 in 2012. Up to 250 kilograms of yard waste will continue to be accepted free of charge.
Regional District Waste Reduction Manager Peter Rotheisler says the increase in fees reflects the increasing cost of managing solid waste in our region. “Hopefully this increase will also provide incentive to residents and businesses to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible.”
