Lakeside Treasure
The District of West Kelowna is pleased to announce the completion of its Gellatly Bay Recreation Corridor Improvement Project - Phase 1.
The construction contract was awarded to R & L Excavating Ltd., began April 21, 2010 and was completed June 30, 2010 in time for the Canada Day holiday weekend.
Shown in the photo, from left to right, West Kelowna Mayor Doug Findlater, Federal Treasury Board President and Okanagan Coquihalla MP Stockwell Day, Community and Rural Development Minister and Westside Kelowna MLA Ben Stewart and Gellatly Bay Trails and Parks Society President John Reddick were present to officially open the new transportation and recreational corridor.
The District of West Kelowna would like to thank the contractor for doing its best to ensure vehicle access was possible at nearly all times, with minimal delays during the construction period. The Municipality also thanks West Kelowna residents for their patience during construction.
Project Highlights
Phase 1 of this new multi-modal corridor is approximately 470 metres in length, stretching from The Cove Lakeside Resort to Powers Creek Bridge.
Phase 1 of the project involved construction of:

Two vehicle travel lanes

Two bicycle lanes on the outside of each travel lane

Parallel parking stalls on the west side

Landscaped Boulevard with street lamps on the east side (lakeside)

A three-metre multi-modal path (rollerblades, pedestrian, etc.) on the east side (lakeside)
In addition, a new playground was installed in adjacent Marina Park.
Valued Partnerships
The total cost of Phase 1, including design and engineering work, was valued at $884,000.
The project was made possible through partnerships with the Government of Canada, the Government of British Columbia and the Gellatly Bay Trails and Parks Society:

Eye to the Future
Phase 2 of the project will extend from Powers Creek Bridge to Rotary Beach Park for a distance of 1,025 metres, with costs and construction dates still to be determined.
