Latest Aerial Photos Added to Online Map System
Crisper, up to date map images of the District of West Kelowna can now be viewed on the Internet through the municipality’s Geographic Information System (GIS).
A contractor took the aerial photographs, or orthophotos, on May 19, 2012. The 185 images, each with a file size of 300 megabytes, were processed over the summer and were given to staff in late September so they could be incorporated into the municipality’s online mapping system. The photographs are sharper than those last taken, in 2009, because of advances in digital photography. Film was used three years ago, and the transfer of images to digital technologies caused some loss in resolution.
With the addition of the 2012 photography, GIS users will not only be able to view West Kelowna in the recent past; they’ll also be able to compare the updated images with photos taken in 2009, 2005 and 2003 to see how the community has transformed in the last nine years – a period of significant growth for the area.
