People, Plants and Pride Growing Together
Communities in Bloom is a Canadian non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification of the community.
The focus of Communities in Bloom is to improve quality of life through community participation in a national program that encourages the protection and promotion of green spaces.
The program consists of communities receiving information and being evaluated, either provincially or nationally, by a volunteer jury of trained professionals on the accomplishments of their entire community (municipal, private, corporate and institutional sectors and citizens) on eight key criteria: Tidiness, Environmental Awareness, Community Involvement, Natural and Cultural Heritage Conservation, Urban Forestry, Landscaped Areas, Floral Displays and Turf & Groundcovers. In 2009, District of West Kelowna and Westbank First Nation received 5 blooms in the national competition.
