BACKGROUND - CEMETERY IMPROVEMENT STRATEGY
On October 23, 2012, Council approved $300,000 in capital spending for the construction of mausoleums, columbaria, bases and wheelchair ramps as part of the District of West Kelowna's Westbank Cemetery Strategy. To read the October 23, 2012 report to Council, please click here.
The District of West Kelowna will construct three mausoleums and three columbaria for sale to the public. Revenue generated will be put directly towards cemetery improvements and capital construction. Future plans include improving the landscaping of the cemetery, creating a green cemetery. Council directed that staff borrow the $300,000 from Reserves for Future Expenditures for this work.
Staff held a public meeting on October 1, 2012, attended by 43 people. A survey was made available at the meeting and on the municipality's website. A total of 116 surveys were submitted with interest shown for the purchase of columbarium niches and mausoleum crypts.
On September 4, 2012 Council directed staff to proceed with the implementation of a Westbank Cemetery Strategy, which would outline the District of West Kelowna's plans for a graduated improvement of the cemetery.
